foundation // 2018
Foundation was a site-specific performance piece that blended the joys of watching nature, the complexities of the “natural” in an urbanized world, and the difficulties of geography. Stringing together essays and poems composed by the performers, we created a physical vocabulary to encourage an audience to experience, listen and watch, instead of trying to immediately project and draw meaning. We blurred fact and fiction, as the unnatural geography of many Chicago beaches do.
The performance took place on the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago in the northernmost reaches of the city, Rogers Park. The original writings were tied together by an original play by Ryan Oliveira.
Below, you can find my condensed dramaturgy and an essay by MJ Wrobel performed in the show.
